What is PetCalc

PetCalc is a free collection of tools that helps pet owners handle the calculations they often wonder about in daily life quickly and easily. From converting dog and cat ages to human years, to food portions matched to weight and activity level, to risk when chocolate is eaten — we publish the formulas and the reasoning so anyone can understand them.

Operating principles (E-E-A-T)

• Experience — We build the situations owners actually face (age, food portion, chocolate intake) directly into tools and show the result step by step.
• Expertise — We calculate based on published standard sources such as energy formulas like RER = 70 × weight^0.75, AAHA/AAFP age conversion guidance, and theobromine toxicity thresholds.
• Authoritativeness — We point to professional bodies for consultation and disclose our data sources.
• Trustworthiness — We do not hide the formulas; we publish them and make clear that every result is an estimate for reference only. Inputs are not collected or stored.

Data sources and basis

The formulas and thresholds used in each calculator are based on widely accepted veterinary and nutrition sources, as below. Values can vary by individual and product, and we update them as needed.

• Age conversion — The life-stage model from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) (age 1 ≈ 15, age 2 ≈ 24, etc.).
• Food portion — The standard RER (Resting Energy Requirement) and MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement) formulas and activity factors by status.
• Chocolate toxicity — Average theobromine content by chocolate type and the general toxicity report thresholds (about 20, 40, and 60 mg/kg).
• American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) — Guidance on pet health and emergencies.
